Let's do 19.
So there's a question here, right?
Where it was, who's going to take over to be the highest paid player after Macklin Celebrini's extension?
And I actually don't think it's going to be Schaefer.
He seems like a kind of guy who will take a reasonable value contract that won't necessarily break the bank and take the blank check and the 20% allowed in the CBA.
He might take a little bit of a discount to let the Islanders build around him and use that salary elsewhere.
So...
To me, I mean, yeah, Schaefer's going to be extension eligible on July 1 of next year, and you'd imagine that the Islanders do what the Sharks did this offseason with Macklin Celebrini and eventually come to terms on a deal.
It'll be interesting, Jeff, to see what that term is, just given how this offseason has kind of shaped out, and these young players, instead of taking that usual max of
eight years which will be seven years starting on september 15th they're taking that five-year deal that only buys one ufa year and really kind of allows them to re-dip in the pool of the contracts at age 26 which is still their prime years
You make a ton of good points.
So like, I hate to push back too much.
It's just, I think the players view it as they know that whatever chunk that they're going to get is going to be less for the rest of their team to build around.
But so your point too, like that's not their job, right?
It's not their fault that they're at the top of their market.
And,
Matthew Schaefer's comments was basically like my agent who's Patrick Morris is going to figure out the numbers for him so they're going to come some offers and you know it could have been a celebration situation to where he also didn't take the max of what he could have and if he waited another year he would have been able to get even more because he signed the extension a year early when the salary cap is going to be going up another nine million dollars that
that adds to the amount percentage that he can take on his next deal.
So he did inherently leave some money on the table as well, but maybe he's, he's happy with that number and maybe he views that as a number that he's comfortable with.
It's generational money, right?
