And then you just watch the NBA night tonight and in the loss to the Thunder and then in the win against the Jazz that they recently had, like Jay Huff, is more important in the Grizzlies rotation right now than Zach Eadie. Jay Huff is the guy they saw play at Summer League and signed him to do a two-way deal and then promoted him.
And to me, that just proves, like, you can find a center anywhere, so I don't love it. So, I mean, maybe Zach Eadie He might turn out to be a really good starting-level NBA center. He might have a career that parallels like a Jonas Valanciunas. But the way the NBA is now where spacing is so important and you want to have everyone who can shoot at all times. I mean, at least Taylor Jenkins did.
I mean, maybe, frankly, maybe the next coach says, Zach Eady, 35 minutes. Let's post up Zach Eady. We got to get Zach Eady touches. That's what the YouTube commenters want. Yeah. Post-ups are down across the league. Not anymore. I mean, maybe next game, Gigi Jackson is out from his Memphis hustle banishment. We got Gigi Jackson starting. We got Zach Eady posting up. No, I don't know.
I mean, all that, that was a really long diatribe on Gigi.
Zach Eady seems fine but like if we had to do it over again why am I drafting Zach Eady when that Matkovich guy went in the second round when Quentin Post you know like on the Warriors like all these centers you just get a guy there's so many centers that just fill in they can do the things you need if you already have a John Morant and a Desmond Bain and a Jaron Jackson Jr.
man like go swing for upside find some of those elite tall wings that like the league seems to revolve around.
It was gigantic. I mean, I had some hope still that if Ja Morant was healthy, you got Ja and you got Jaron and you got Desmond Bain. I consider Brandon Clark to be part of probably what your closing lineup's going to be. They usually close the game with Brandon and Jaron in the frontcourt. I mean, even Santi Aldama's been excellent this year.
Even if Santi Aldama played, they had started playing... Santi at the small forward some, so they can still have Brandon Clark on the court. And I think the loss of Brandon, it's just catastrophic. I think it basically, in my not optimistic view, it removed any chance of the Grizzlies probably winning a first-round series.
I thought his switchability on defense from the big position, his activity on the glass, it was so important to what the Grizzlies did. And frankly, when the Grizzlies won their one playoff series, with this current group under Taylor Jenkins, it was because Brandon Clark was incredible. The Timberwolves went out and traded for Rudy Gobert because Brandon Clark destroyed them in a playoff series.
They couldn't keep Brandon Clark off the glass. So that was a proven playoff performer. And even Santiago Dama, as good as he's been this year, he's completely unproven in the playoffs. And then we go back to the Zach Eady. Is Zach Eady going to be the guy you depend on? He's losing minutes to Jay Huff. So it's like, I think Brandon Clark was crucial to their playoff plans. And...
Once he went down, I was like, oh, I would now be actually really surprised if the Grizzlies are able to escape the first round.
Yeah, it's weird when you just think about... I guess it all comes down to expectations of Ja being a superstar and being an all-NBA-level player. Like, he's still... has what he's averaging 22 and seven and the Grizzlies have a fantastic record when he plays. So like he's still excellent. He's still all-star level. Of course, his frame and the way he plays seems like it leads to injury.
As far as some of the injury reporting disparity, Chris Harrington, who covers the Grizzlies for the daily Memphian. I think he was wanting to point out like the NBA doesn't like it when you say a guy's sore. you have like a limited number of times you could say your players out with soreness. So I think that's probably maybe if we connect the dots again, sure.
That's why the hamstring sort of became a hamstring strain. So, so John Morant, like the NBA, it wouldn't be, I don't know. The Grizzlies wouldn't run a foul of the player participation policy, but obviously, yeah.
The John Morant thing, because he is a superstar, he's a social media superstar, you know, the jersey sales, he's the Grizzlies' biggest player in their history, easily one of the most well-known NBA players, and he's crucial to the Grizzlies. If I had 100% confidence in John Morant's health and ability to finish a playoff series, I would not be mourning the Brandon Clark loss quite like I am.
I would still be very sad. I would still feel like that's a huge blow, but Hey, we have John Moran who will, by the way, look up his playoff stats. They're outrageous. Yeah. I think he's career 28 points per game in the playoffs. So I think there's the question like, like, and I don't know what the clear answer is. Like, is it, are they being super cautious with his injuries?
Is he just not feeling totally healthy? Thus he's sitting out. I mean, I think if it's a hamstring issue, that makes sense. You can't risk a hamstring injury. aggravation a few weeks before the playoffs.
So while it has been a disappointing in some sense season, and the fact that he hasn't been available as much as you would like, it's also, it's unfortunately, it's just kind of par for the course. Like when you think about John Morant, you're like, all right, I hope he plays 60, 65 games. He's going to come in under that this year. I mean, it's going to be around 50.
It looks like, but it's a, it's not an easy question. Like even like, what does a team with a Ja Morant do? It's not maybe quite as bad as the Pelicans with Zion Williamson,
where like jaw is still the biggest draw and he's still fantastic when he plays just wondering, all right, does just every year we have to hope that he ends up healthy for the playoffs, like Kawhi Leonard style, even though he's, you know, 10 years younger than Kawhi.
