It's really hard to say. I would guess injuries between those two things. I would just guess that it seemed like at times he was tentative or not as quick getting by guys and finishing at the rim. His actual stats as far as his efficiency at the rim is way lower this year.
His turnovers were up, and you would think maybe that is because of this new offense or people not being where he thought he was going to be. A lot of it, and I haven't tracked this, a lot of the Grizzlies turnovers are trying to throw the ball to Zach Eady. I don't like, I don't, I don't want to exaggerate.
Let's say 10% of all Grizzlies turnovers this year are trying to throw the ball to Zach Eady. Some of them are bad passes. Some of them, they throw them really high or like guys, Zach Eady can't actually drop that high, but like there wasn't an immediate chemistry between jaw and Zach. There's a lot of like jaw throwing it to where he thought like, uh,
I thought an NBA guy would have dunked that home, and you weren't ready for the pass. And so, I don't know. Like, I do think we've had a concern all year about, is Ja 100% healthy? Is that why he hasn't been the same Ja that we expected? But then, of course, when you overhaul an entire offense...
When you come into, this was Taylor Jenkins' sixth year, and in the offseason, he's like, all right, we're firing every assistant coach. We're bringing in basically all new assistant coaches, and we're installing a new offense. And everyone's like, cool. That shows the Grizzlies are going hard. It's also like, hey, that sounds really risky. Like, you have a really good team.
Like, you have a really good team with really good players. You have Ja Morant. Do we need to reinvent the wheel? And I don't know. I mean, it's hard, again, to draw conclusions from these things because the results were there for so long. If you want to get picky, which we do, we say, well, the results were there against bad teams. You were blowing the doors off of bad teams.
You had a lot of trouble winning on the road. You had a lot of trouble beating good teams on the road. I mean, but everybody does. But it's like, if you thought of yourselves as a contender, then why do you lose every road game against a Western Conference playoff team? And maybe they thought, look, we thought maybe we'd be better than this. And so Taylor Zing isn't our guy. Here's the opportunity.
Let's move on now and see what we can do. I'm still at a loss as we talk on Friday. Who's the interim coach? That's a great question. They have a homestand against the Lakers, Celtics, and Warriors. Those are the next three games. And we're talking about you could potentially fall into the play-in.
If you lose specifically the games against the Warriors and Lakers will have a lot of meaning because of playoff seating. And who's the coach going to be? And so, yeah, I'm flabbergasted.
I would guess, I mean, Tomas Asalo, the guy they hired in the off seasons who was like the hot new assistant from Europe who's installing this new offense that, you know, everyone, no pick and rolls, just kind of isolation basketball, spacing the court, you know, or, you know, very, very few pick and rolls. So I don't know. They should let me do it. I thought podcasters are getting hired.

That's interesting. So, I mean, for full disclosure, before the draft, I knew nothing about I mean, I knew he I knew he played for Purdue and I knew he was tall. So, yeah, I didn't know anything about. Yeah. And so preparing for the draft with the Grizzlies having the ninth pick, I'm reading everyone's blurbs about all the players. I'm starting to form my opinions about the players.
General rule for me. as someone who doesn't follow the draft or the prospects, if I have a high pick, I don't want to draft a center, just general rule. I think center is the easiest position to find in the NBA. I think there's always a guy out there who's just solid. And, you know, so I'm like, all right, we have a top 10 pick. Probably let's go upside here. And then they went for Zach Eadie.
So I'm like, okay, maybe this will work. They clearly they've drafted great for years. That's their big advantage. It seems like is they're really good at the draft. So let's see what Eadie can bring. I got real high on like the idea of him screening for jaw and the two man game. And like, he's been fine. But now I think when I look back,
however, what, 10 months or whatever, and I see what the Grizzlies have done with their roster since then, which is lay out a free agency once again,
make no trades to improve your roster, then when you get to the trade deadline to actually salary dump guys, and it's like, oh, all we're doing is getting another luxury tax slash creating possible avenues to extend and re-sign Jaren before he hits free agency, and that's been the entire focus as opposed to actually trying to improve for this year. Using that prism, using that hindsight...
I actually fall back to my first thing about, I don't think you should draft a center in the top 10 in the NBA anymore, because it looks like they drafted him for need, because they knew they needed a center, and instead of using the MLE to go get a guy, just a random guy, your go-go batazes of the world, or just anyone...
Instead of wanting to have that salary on the books, it now looks like they're like, no, no, no. We already have to have a ninth pick salary on the books. We can't have any other salaries. So let's get our center right here. And that's just me connecting dots. This is my podcast conspiracy theory stuff where I'm like, it looks like we drafted for need. And I don't love that.
