Then Pilate took Jesus and had him.
Flogged.
The soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on his head.
They clothed him in a purple robe and went up to him again and again, saying, Hail, King of the Jews.
And they slapped him in the face.
Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him.
When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, Here is
the man.
Why do you think Rome crucified Jesus?
Because he went around spreading a message of love?
No.
There were other itinerant preachers in that day, and Rome didn't crucify any of them.
So then why did they crucify him?
Well, when Jesus is hung on the cross, remember the soldiers put a sign above his head.
This is the sign that Pilate had ordered, and the sign read Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.
Rome crucified Jesus because he claimed to be the true king.
They could put up with a lot, but they wouldn't put up with someone claiming the authority that belonged to Caesar alone.
When the soldiers dress Jesus in the purple robe, when they put that crown of thorns on his head, when they give him a fake salute saying, Hey, oh King of the Jews, it's all designed to humiliate, to say, Is this what your king looks like?
But John's gospel is soaked in irony because the soldiers are unintentionally preaching the gospel, because Jesus really is the king, and this is exactly what his crown looks like.
Thorns aren't a contradiction of his kingship.
