Jesus answered, You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
See, Pilate thinks he holds the power.
He says, I have authority to release you and to crucify you.
And Jesus corrects him.
He says, You would have no authority over me unless it had been given to you from above.
Notice who is actually in control.
Pilate is sweating.
Pilate is afraid.
Pilate is negotiating.
He's losing his grip.
But Jesus is composed.
Jesus is silent because Jesus is sovereign.
The man on trial is the one who truly reigns.
Even bound and beaten, Jesus is the king, not because the crowd crowns him the king, but because his throne was never theirs to grant.
