And a mailing list had been running since 1971 to send out tour dates and ticket information, and it had grown to 40,000 names and a newsletter of its own. matched

You know, new people keep coming in over the years, and then old. matched

So people came and went from the scene as they pleased. matched

And the summer tour of 1995 would be the band's last, nearly two months of 26 shows, and it went wrong from the start. matched

It opened on June 15th at an airfield in Highgate, Vermont. matched

Vermont, where thousands of people turned up without tickets and pressed against the gates until they were opened. matched

And Dennis McNaily, the band's publicist, said, quote, they were going to come through the gates no matter what. matched

So they opened the gates, and then 10,000 more people were inside than there should have been. matched

And Jerry Garcia, the band's frontman and lead guitarist, was in even worse shape than the tour was, with his health failing fast. matched
