So Flasterstein dug deeper and he did what apparently no one in Missouri had done before.
He just picked up the phone and called Gypsy's former providers in New Orleans.
Because remember the records that were supposedly destroyed in Katrina?
Well, they weren't.
They weren't, actually.
They existed.
And they showed that years earlier, Gypsy's muscle biopsy, the definitive test for muscular dystrophy, had come back negative.
So the disease at the center of Gypsy's entire medical identity had been ruled out.
on paper, before the storm.
And in a letter to Gypsy's primary care doctor, later obtained by ABC News, Flasterstein wrote it out in black and white.
And he said he believed the mother suffered from Munchausen's by proxy.
So he had solved it in 2007.
And Gypsy Rose at that point was 15 years old, though obviously she didn't know that.
So one doctor in Springfield, Missouri had the entire con figured out, but then nothing happened.
Vlasterstein never reported his suspicions to social services, and he would later say he'd been warned by previous doctors to handle this family delicately, and that he doubted anyone, including law enforcement, would take his word over a devoted beloved mother.
Because they're like famous in Springfield at this point.
I still think it's messed up that he didn't say anything, but...
Who am I to say?
And Dee Dee, for her part, did what she always did when someone got too close and she just bad-mouthed the doctor to everyone who'd listen and simply never brought Gypsy back.
So that window closed.
