So an index fund is essentially like a basket of individual stocks, right?
So the stock or share.
Stocks being?
Stock being, the most simple way to think about it is you own a little piece of a company.
So we use stocks and shares interchangeably.
So an index is a defined basket of names, so of individual stocks in that basket.
The most recognizable one is S&P 500, where it's 500 of the largest traded companies in the US.
And you own, when you invest in the index, you own a little piece of the 500.
Now, an ETF is something different.
An ETF can be an index fund, but maybe it is not.
So an ETF essentially stands for an exchange-traded fund, any fund that trades on an exchange intraday.
So your S&P 500 versions, index funds, will be ETFs.
But you also could have ETFs on composites of commodities or bonds or different types of funds.
Yeah, exactly.
So there's thousands and thousands of ETFs.
