So they saved some money on Henry Davis and spent it.
on Bubba Chandler uh which you know you can make an argument right now that Bubba Chandler probably could be worthy of the number one overall pick given the potential that he's shown but but certainly Henry Davis has the confidence at the plate uh you know the cops for him coming out of college were Kyle Schwarber a guy who another guy who was a catcher in college uh was a catcher in Indiana
And also was a very high draft pick.
I think he went number two overall to the Cubs.
Very much similar in size, stature, and the power.
And I'm not saying that Henry Davis is going to turn into Kyle Schwarber overnight, but it is a reminder that Kyle Schwarber killed some promise, but also had his share of scuffles at the plate.
and was designated for assignment by the Chicago Cubs before resuscitating his career with the Washington Nationals.
I think the Pirates are hopeful that Henry Davis will figure it out with them before they get to that point, especially given how he was a guy that they had such little confidence in as a catcher that they put him in right field, even though it's a position he'd only played very, very little in the minor leagues, that they felt that there was an athlete.
He went from being minus four defensive runs saved in 2024 to plus eight.
this past season.
Got some gold glove votes.
If he can do that as a defensive catcher, I think the Pirates feel like offense, which his bat was considered his carrying tool, that he can do the same thing, that type of a turnaround this year at the plate.
Yeah, I mean, his name was thrown around last spring, too.
I really think before the Pirates trade Joey Bart or even consider trading Joey Bart, that they're going to have to see what they have in Andy Rodriguez in terms of whether he's durable enough to stay behind the plate.
and whether his arm can hold up, you know, given that he's had some serious arm issues the last couple seasons.
They also have some β you know, they're pretty high on Rafael Flores, who was acquired in the David Bednar trade from the New York Yankees.
They feel like that's a guy that has some potential β
at the plate and behind it, but also like Rodriguez has some positional versatility that he can play first base.
He might be able to move to the outfield if he needed to, but I think it's more a matter of whether those guys can show that there's
you know, some consistency back there because you don't want to do what they did last year and trade Jason Delay.
