The last is research.
we need to continue to come up with models that not only create breakthroughs, but breakthroughs our country can afford.
So it's great that we have gene therapy, but if Medicaid won't pay for it because it's so expensive, then you have an equity issue.
So I think an obligation we have in research is not just continuing the fantastic research we do.
Don't just keep winning prizes, inventions, so forth, but come up with
breakthroughs that America can afford.
Yeah, no, it's a fascinating question one I wrestle with a lot in terms of the ecosystem.
University of Pennsylvania, our academic medical center is in an urban core.
Many academic medical centers tend to be in urban cores, which means not only are we providing advanced medicine, but we also have to be the safety net for the city.
As hospitals close around us, that pressure is mounting to take care of
more community-level care, which again is not our sweet spot.
Our sweet spot is advanced medicine.
It is expensive for us to be doing community-level care.
So at Penn, we keep trying to figure out how do we get upstream?
How can we meet the patient where they're at, not just in our emergency room, but through digital health?
through community health, through community health workers?
How do we try to take care of that safety net that's critical to us?
At the other end of the spectrum, it is an ecosystem.
