What these stimulants were allowing me to do was get back to work and to be more productive.

And so ADHD is a diagnosis that essentially pathologizes underproductivity.

Back in Zimbabwe, I was one of the top high school students in the country.

And when I came to a competitive American liberal arts institution, I

I was underproductive.

I was pathologized.

And you know, that was a r that was my first kind of wake-up call to what psychiatry was and how it worked and how it operated.

There were a couple of turning points for me, and both of them um are related to being queer as a person um and caring a lot about queer communities.

One of them I talk about in the book, which is when I was in medical school.

trying to decide in my fourth year of medical school whether to become an internist or psychiatrist.

And I was shopping rotations in in both fields.

And I was in this um fairly advanced rotation in LGBTQ psychiatry.

Where I was helping a psychiatrist do psychiatric assessments for patients who wanted gender-affirming surgeries.

And I saw a lot of trans people who essentially would come to us to get the checkbox ticked.

And

What I learned taking care of a patient with um whose name was Vanessa, um, you know, she came into my clinic and sat down, and she presented herself in such a an orderly way.

And it was my job to do her mental status exam to make sure that you know her behavior was a certain way, that her eye contact was good, that she was.
