And as she brings us into the story, right, it had not occurred to her
yet, that it occurred to her that it was a challenging thing to do it, right, to take on this task.
And her perception of her performance is that she had done her best, and that she was at least in the running.
Because a few cuts had been made, and she had made it along.
But that person robbed her of her innocence.
There's a moment that, you know, Ashley, I'm a mom, right?
And I can put my finger on the moment when that happened to both of my sons,
they were robbed of their innocence, where this idea of,
who they are and their position in the world.
And there's this moment that comes along that says, you're not the ideal.
You're not the ideal at all.
You know, one of my kids, when he was little and early in elementary school, I was talking to a mom outside of school one day and I was like, oh,
yeah, we should get the kids together for a play date.
I was like, yeah, let's do it.
And I get my son in the car and I'm like, hey, I'm going to set up a play date for you and this kid.
And my son looked at me and said, I don't think I want to go over there for a play date.
We could play at school, but I don't want to go over there for a play date because he said that black people are bad and they don't work hard.
And the thing is, my son was, like, in the maybe first or second grade at the time.
And the only way that... He sort of inherently knew around that point that it wouldn't be safe for him to be at that house where those ideas were percolating.
So as long as I'm on neutral territory, like, we could play at school, but I'm not going in there.
