Chris's father, Costa, had come to Port Elizabeth as a teenager, and he built his life and success out of businesses of snack bars in the heart of the city, and he had shares in a grocery store chain.
It was the kind of enterprises that put a Greek family's name on the map there.
They were well-known, and they were established.
a family that had money that Jade married into.
So when the word got out that a Pena Yotu wife had been taken, a member of a well-known wealthy family, a business family in a city like that where kidnapping for ransom was a real and present danger, it landed in a very particular way.
Remember I told you, because of the family she was part of, her husband's family.
The running theory at that moment was that Jade was taken for ransom and she was being kept by someone.
But Jade's disappearance wasn't just one family's nightmare.
It was everybody's.
It was the exact thing that every mother, daughter, every wife in this area had been quietly afraid of.
And it was happening to someone that they could put a face and a name to.
Someone respectable.
They were starting to think, that could have been me, that could have been my sister, my mother.
And so a city that too often looked away from its own violence because there just was simply too much of it for them to really take it in, they realized they had to stare it down.
So this is where Jade disappears from.
From this beautiful, yet could be dangerous, close-knit town on the coast.
Now, Chris and Jade specifically lived in Stellan Glen Complex, and I'm a very visual person, and maybe you are too, and maybe you're wondering what this area looked like, and what their townhouse complex looked like as well, and what the gate looked like, and why Charisse couldn't get in.
