It's warm, easygoing, a seaside city with a small town vibe.
And on the surface, it's paradise.
But there is another side to this city, and the people who live there know it very intimately.
The wider metro area that's around it, called the Nelson Mandela Bay, is also one of the most violent places in South Africa.
And in exactly these years, in 2015, and then the months around it, the violence had been climbing sharply.
This was a country where, at the time, the national figures put the number of murders around 47 people killed every single day.
In this area specifically, you're looking at about two people murdered every day in that area where she lived.
This is a city where hijackings, armed robberies, they were not shocking when you saw them in the headlines.
So if you were a woman living in this area, you carried a certain kind of fear with you everywhere.
The way that you would just carry around your keys.
And I know that sounds terrible, but it was true for the people who live there at this time.
