But I've got bad news.

For five days, everyone was looking for this stranger.

The man in the hat at the ATM, the biggest lead.

but it was all wrong.

The face that the whole city was hunting for, the police concluded was not their guy.

But let me be really precise about why, because here's what happened.

Jade's card was used at ATMs.

The police had two clocks they were working off, the bank records of when transactions happened and the timestamp on the ATMs own camera footage.

And those two clocks didn't match.

ATM camera clocks are notorious for being wrong.

They are usually off by minutes or more.

So when the police grabbed footage of the man at the ATM at 725 a.m.

and put it out to the public, they were assuming that on its face, the camera lined up with the moment that Jade's car was used.

But when they went back and they tried to reconcile those timestamps, that assumption fell apart.

The man that they had plastered everywhere across the entire city was not there when that specific transaction was made.

He was just essentially some random guy using an ATM.

A stranger caught on camera, circulated by mistake.

So the ATM man, that was a false lead that the police accidentally created themselves by trusting a camera clock.
