And that's when he started to wonder what was really going on.
There was money on the floor.
There was a loose change scattered across the area near the register.
There were DVDs and video games and knocked over things completely out of place.
The kind of disorder that doesn't come from just a busy day or even a rushed closing shift.
It was different.
This was a look of something that had happened, something bad.
And Mariano's eyes are moving across the floor, across the counter, across the disturbed state of everything in his line of sight.
And his mind immediately goes to the obvious, a robbery.
But none of it fully added up either.
because Brandon was there.
Brandon had presumably come into the store, seen the money on the floor, seen the register open, seen the games scattered around, seen what was obviously not a normal morning, and was just standing at the counter like it was a normal day.
He's not frantic.
He's not calling for help.
He wasn't in the back checking on Amber, whose car is still sitting right out front of the parking lot.
He's just standing there, going through the opening procedures.
And Mariano was like, what are you doing?
Brandon acted like the answer was obvious, but he explained, I'm here for my shift.
I saw the disarray.
And his first thought was that the person who closed the night before just didn't do their job.
