Doctor Kuhn talks about how we need to pay attention not only to what is said, but also to how it is said.

And she says that there are many different types of communication systems, such as sign language, Morse code, and even instant messaging which everybody uses now, um, a lot of our young people.

Now language itself is a system of codes or symbols that a culture uses to communicate about objects, relations and events within that culture.

For instance, I'm currently using the English language to communicate with you now.

So using language involves both receiving and understanding messages and formulating or sending messages.

When we receive a language message and try to understand that message, that's called receptive language.

when we put our own message together and send it to someone, this is called expressive language.

And then speech is verbal language or the process of producing voice and sounds and combining them to communicate.

But what happens if you don't have speech or you're unable to communicate your communication needs so easily?

Well, we need to think about other types of communication and how we communicate.

And this is where augmentative and alternative communication comes in.

A couple of big words I know.

And so a lot of people refer to it as AAC and I'm going to use that term just for um ease of use throughout this interview.

So what is AAC and what is its purpose?

Well, augmentative and alternative communication refers to interventions or tools to compensate for expressive language.

And having a method of AAC can decrease frustration, reduce and prevent problem behaviours, and allow people to express their needs effectively.

Now that I've given you some background on the basics of communication and language, it's time to introduce our guest today.

I'm going to introduce our author and illustrator Katz Hampson.
