As a strong advocate for animal welfare, she wrote and illustrated her first book, Luna, The Little Moon Bear Cub, and that was back in 2010, under the name of Katz Thompson.
Professionally, Katz Hampson has worked for over 20 years in a specialist education setting, both in Australia and New Zealand.
Working alongside children and teenagers with diverse needs, Katz has developed a passion for nurturing and enriching the lives of young people.
Her dream of writing and illustrating a picture book about neurodivergence aimed at a young audience finally came true last year.
Welcome to the show, Kath.
Well we are very happy to have you here and I just want to say it was very kind of you to give a book one uh one of the copies of your book to the library and as I mentioned earlier that book is called Lila's Story.
But we're going to dive into a bit more detail now.
So Katz, can you tell us a bit more about your background and your current role?
Yeah, yeah, that's so important.
And y the y some of your students have re recently visited the C C S Disability Action Library as well, which was wonderful to have them there.
Absolutely.
As as I've said before, the library is a safe, inclusive and welcoming space.
So what inspired you to write and illustrate?
Because you're the not only the writer, Katz, but you're the illustrator as well.
And I have to tell you folks that illustrations in this book are absolutely beautiful.
What inspired you to write and illustrate this book?
Wow.
Yeah, and th as I've said before, the pictures are amazing and I find that hard to believe you haven't had any professional training that so just visually appealing and help tell that story.
So on the subject of art, how do you think that art and creativity help children who feel left out or misunderstood?
Yeah, and certainly art is an international language in itself.
