And so climate change not only acts directly on the snow leopard and its prey, but also indirectly through how humans change their land use.
These beautiful mountains are going from being rangelands for pastoralists who could live with wildlife,
Now they are going to be used for development projects which are not compatible with wildlife conservation.
And so climate change is kind of a double whammy with its direct ecological impact and indirect impact through human land use change.
The snow leopard should thrive and it will thrive if we do inclusive conservation.
I think conservation of the snow leopard has to include the people who live in the snow leopard habitat.
If those people are not taken on board, then the snow leopard will go extinct.
And so I think it is less about where we classify the animal and more about how do we go about conserving it.
This is a species that cannot be protected inside national parks.
It needs those vast, continuous mountainscapes.
And those mountainscapes can only stay the way they are if we bring on board local people, if they feel supported and they are not alienated.
So I think the biggest challenge for snow leopard conservation is to find ways to make it inclusive of everybody who's living in those areas.
