find ways of living with snow leopards so that large tracts can be places where both people and snow leopards live together.
It's a difficult question because the revenue that tourism brings is important money for local herders.
If we expect local people to live alongside snow leopards, they also need to benefit from the snow leopards and tourism is one way in which they can benefit.
Fortunately, so far, the impact of tourism is limited to a few places and the negative impacts of tourism is not at the same scale as we've seen it for some of the other species.
That being said, we don't know how this is going to play out.
And right now is the time to have the right kind of regulations to ensure that tourism benefits this ecosystem but does not harm it.
But if I am to say, yes, right now, if done responsibly, tourism can benefit snow leopard conservation because snow leopard conservation has to happen outside protected areas and people have to benefit from this animal.
That and also regulating it so that there is equity in it.
I don't think tourism should benefit a few people who can run elite tourism establishments.
I think the money has to trickle down to the people who are living alongside the snow leopard.
That's the main reason why we would want tourism there, so that people can find means of being with this ghost of the mountains.
If the tourism is not benefiting local people, they will develop resentment because they are the ones who are bearing the cost while somebody else is benefiting from it.
And that kind of tourism has no place in conservation.
Yes, of course.
The snow leopard habitat is the largest patch of snow and ice outside the poles, and it is melting rapidly.
Now, this melting affects the vegetation, which affects the herbivores and hence snow leopards.
But there is a bigger change afoot.
With climate change, how humans use the mountains is also changing.
We're putting up a lot of development projects, both to deal with climate change and to further expand into the mountains.
