And when you do that, people are far more tolerant of the snow leopards taking an odd goat here and there.
Now, the role that blue sheep plays in this is very interesting.
Earlier on, we used to think that if there isn't enough brew sheep or enough wild prey, that is when snow leopards would kill more goats.
But turns out, snow leopards kill a small percentage of goats.
And when you have a lot of wild prey, of course you have a lot of snow leopards.
And a lot of snow leopards means some of them will kill a goat sometime.
So just increasing wild prey is not a silver bullet solution to protecting livestock.
Livestock needs to be protected, you know, using physical barriers.
But having more blue sheep is what really allows us to have a lot of snow leopards.
No blue sheep is no snow leopards.
But having blue sheep is not a panacea.
We still have to guard our livestock well.
Yes, people are very understanding and tolerant of this animal.
Is that the only reason that they're protected?
No.
I think the small leopards are also shy and resilient to some of these changes.
But now the pace of change is very fast, both because of climate and land use changes.
Snow leopards have, like I mentioned, very low density, but they also have very low genetic diversity, which means they need large, continuous tracts of land.
And we cannot protect such large lands inside protected areas like National Park or nature reserves.
And so we need to work with the people.
