But they don't call like, you know, sometimes lions call to announce their presence and defend their territories.

Snow leopards are not calling for that.

They use scent marking and physical patrolling to defend their territories.

I've seen males who have these deep scars on their faces from territorial fights.

So defending a patch of land does seem to get violent.

But again, no sound.

So that is the core thesis of the book.

Yes, snow leopards occur in low densities across the mountains.

These are low productive areas.

And so snow leopards need to find food.

And sometimes it's the odd sheep or goat that they take.

Now, of course, the herders don't like it, but they are understanding.

I did a survey where I spoke to 400 herders and most of them said that

And so if they killed a goat here and there, it's fine.

What they don't like is when the snow leopard gets inside the livestock holding pen or corral and then it goes on a killing spree and takes down many, many animals.

That is really when herders don't like it and develop some resentment.

But if it's an odd goat here and there, people have lived with these animals and are understanding of the situation.

And that is where conservation and its role comes in.

We work with local herders to secure their corals so that snow leopards cannot get in.
