So when they're climbing mountains, they're literally pulling themselves up.
They also have very strong hindquarters to leap up.
and a long tail which is actually the same length as their body size which is like the balancing pole of a tightrope walker so together with this strong upper body flexible shoulders that allow them to you know angle their four four legs in multiple ways to pull themselves up and then the tail you know a combination of all of this is what makes them amazing on these big mountains
Can they roar like other big cats?
They don't.
They are big cats, but they don't roar.
They're the only big cat that cannot roar.
They don't have the necessary vocal cords, but they meow and they do a long call called and that call reverberates through valleys.
So they're able to reach long distances without necessarily roaring.
Yes.
So they don't seem to use their voice to defend territory.
They only use this voice to attract mate.
And mating happens in the thick of the winter.
So starting autumn, November and December every year, you hear the snow leopards call in the mountains, sometimes very mellow, but resonating and far reaching.
I've heard the call at times and never found the snow leopard.
but they're calling to find their mate.
And so that's the only period of the year, autumn and early winter, when you hear this beautiful voice just echoing in the Himalaya.
So they do carve out huge territories.
A male could have a territory larger than 200, even 300 or sometimes even 400 square kilometers.
Females have smaller territories and they mark their territories with their urine scent and they patrol these territories regularly.
