Nancy's pocketbook was inside with cosmetics and about a dollar in change, although her bill fold was missing.
There was one other detail that stood out.
The passenger seat had been pushed farther back than usual, as though someone taller had been sitting there.
Whatever Nancy had planned to accomplish that Friday, she seemed to have done most of it.
But now her car was stuck off a secluded road, and there was no obvious explanation for where Nancy had gone.
Police, firefighters, and Rhode Island State Police spread out through the surrounding woods with bloodhounds and searched until around eleven o'clock Saturday night before the weather turned against them.
Snow began falling, and by the next morning roughly six inches covered the ground.
The nearby pond and reservoir were already locked beneath winter ice, making the water impossible to search completely.
As word spread, police fielded some tips that placed Nancy not far from where her car was apparently abandoned.
While others suggested she may have crossed state lines for reasons unknown.
One of the first potentially significant accounts came from two ten-year-old boys who had been in the Rumford Woods on Friday afternoon looking for Christmas greens.
The young witnesses told police that around two o'clock they saw a man and a woman arrive in a car near the same area where Nancy's oldsmobile was found.
They said the pair got out and started walking toward the reservoir, and the boys said it appeared the man had an arm around the woman and was pushing or directing her along.
At some point, they heard what sounded like a woman screaming.
That account sent crews back through the scene of the car, but by then whatever footprints, tire impressions, or other traces might have existed on Friday were now much harder to find in the snow.
And darkness eventually brought the search to a stop without an answer.
There was another potentially relevant report from Rumford II.
At around seven o'clock Friday evening, two men and two women reportedly stopped at an East Providence service station and asked what it would cost to tow a car that was stuck somewhere nearby.
