When they heard the price, they drove away without arranging for the tow.
Since Nancy's car had been found stuck in that same general area, police understandably wanted to know who those people were.
The car they were driving was said to resemble one belonging to friends of the frenniers, but investigators questioned that friend and determined he was not the person who had asked about the toe.
So there was a plausible theory developing that Nancy never really made it out of Rumford that afternoon, but other witnesses began putting her somewhere else entirely.
A store keeper in Dighton, Massachusetts said he recognized Nancy from her photograph.
He said a woman matching her description came into his store between five and six Friday evening, bought cigarettes, and asked for directions to New Bedford.
She was driving a two toned car.
That sighting wasn't easy to dismiss because New Bedford actually made sense in Nancy's life.
She was born there, lived there for about nine years, and still had a grandmother in the city.
Nancy's mother told police that her daughter had even mentioned wanting to visit her grandmother that very day.
Then another report came from North Dartmouth.
A woman matching Nancy's description had reportedly stopped at a house and asked to use the telephone.
The homeowner remembered that she seemed disturbed.
Now investigators had a problem.
If the boys in Rumford had seen Nancy at two o'clock, then the reservoir and surrounding woods looked very important and
But if the later sightings in Dighton and Dartmouth were really Nancy, then she had apparently been alive hours later and miles away in Massachusetts.
While investigators tried to figure out which witnesses had actually seen Nancy, they were also taking a harder look at the people closest to her.
That included her husband William.
Police gave William a lie detector test and questioned him about inconsistencies in what he had initially told them.
One detail in particular stood out?
