The girl fought back and managed to get out of the car before the violence could escalate.
The boy tried to evade police, but a Pawtucket patrolman chased him down and apprehended him.
He was sixteen year old Thomas Knott, Jr.
The attack stood in sharp contrast to how people who knew Thomas described him.
He was a star athlete, a fullback on the Tolman High School football team, and one of the school's top sprinters.
Coaches and others around him described him as quiet, passive, and generally well behaved, someone who had not previously stood out as a troublemaker.
After the knife point attack, Thomas was sent for court ordered psychiatric evaluation and held for observation for a few weeks.
