Yeah, exactly.

It's like they just have a whole bunch of phones connected to a wall of chargers, and they have somebody going through, and they use VPNs.

And I should say, I've been obsessed with this for a long time.

I went pretty hard at it for a couple of months, but there are techniques I'm sure that I didn't find out about.

AI is now a new factor in this, and so there are a lot of different ways to do this, but even the low-tech, easiest ways are still pretty terrifying.

Yeah, but it's like I think there is a meaningful difference between paying to get something on MTV or the radio where it's like I think people are skeptical a little bit of gatekeepers like radio and MTV.

Like people are aware, I guess, of AILA or, you know, they know that, you know, bands have publicists and they know that.

Again, I think this is a different category.

This is just faking fans.

So they do pay bots, companies that basically send bots to Spotify to stream things.

And so there's a very interesting investigation about Tidal, the streaming service a few years ago, where I think they found Beyonce album Lemonade and Life of Pablo, the Kanye album, where they found that basically if the stats that were published by the streaming services were true, then every single paying Tidal customer would have to have been streaming these albums like crazy.

45 hours a day for like an entire month.

So every step on all of these platforms, we should be suspicious.

Right.

Sort of the other, and this is me editorializing, of course, but this is so lame.

It's like, what kind of psychopath loser wants to win this game?

And yet this is the way that we're playing it right now.

And so, yeah, if you just want to do this with any honesty, it's like you just get swept away by the tidal wave of all of this nonsense.

Yeah, I think it's pretty scary.

It's like you want to believe there's some democracy to this or that you can be heard by the strength of what you're actually doing.
