It's gravy browning.

So if anyone knows gravy browning, it's caramel, molasses, um, it's the stuff you put into a gravy to make it brown, to make it a bit sweeter.

That's what they're using.

That's what they were slapping on.

Smelling it, smelling of caramel and molasses.

And you like now it's anecdotal because it's people who are remembering their mothers doing it, their aunties doing it during and it's primarily in the UK during the very, you know, of course, extreme rationing that would have been taking place.

And the reason for that is of course with the great nylon shortage

uh which happens because DuPont's only really they're the they're one of the biggest factories who are creating nylon that comes in and replaces silk with with hosiery and that's obviously been used for parachutes during World War Two.

So they have to find different ways.

What they're trying to do is not to get a fake tan, they're trying to mimic the colouring they're getting from the hosiery.

Okay, yeah.

Yeah, y you find it pop up a lot in Ireland specifically in the seventies and eighties, and that's because throughout the when you start to get big tanning products like man tan and copper tone, they're not really there's not great advertisement for it here in Ireland.

We've a slightly different um association with fake tanning in the fifties and sixties.

In the seventies and eighties, obviously you've got the rise of package holidays.

It certainly does help, but we do have some sun, and people are still tanning.
