It all depends what you mean by given over to housing.
Imagine that someone builds 40 houses on a one hectare plot.
What area is given over to housing?
Only the actual footprint of the houses?
Or the gardens and the roads and pavements that connect them?
Yes, it makes a very big difference.
Add in just the gardens for England and it's almost five times as much land as the houses alone.
Every calculation so far has just looked at the footprint of the house.
The ground directly under the roof, if you like.
Shelter's numbers, Paul Cheshire's numbers and Severin's numbers all take that quite compressed view.
And England, 0.59% golf course but 5.38% houses and gardens, nine times as much.
And you could tell a similar story if you included Wales and Scotland, although there would be more land that was neither house nor golf course.
And if you take a broad view about the land necessary for houses and gardens, let alone the roads that connect them, then it's wrong by a factor of nine.
According to the World Bank, the UK as a whole has more than twice the population density of France and a bit more than Germany.
But Belgium has a higher population density and the Netherlands has almost twice the UK's density.
Yes, although the population density of the South East is much greater, nearly at the level of the Netherlands, and that figure doesn't include London itself.
