They compared this with land use data from DEFRA, which shows that 1.1% of England's land is covered by domestic buildings.

But add in nine whole golf courses and driving ranges and voila, more golf than houses.
That came out in spring this year.
Professor Paul Cheshire, an economist at the London School of Economics, wrote a paper about planning policies in which he worked out that more of Surrey is under golf courses, about 2.65%, than has houses on it.
And he used roughly the same approach.
For that, we'd need a statistical superhero.
