And I think it's sometimes it's something that naturally happens kind of at the zenith of something intolerable that's been ongoing for a long time.

Like, I think it calls for a kind of rigorous honesty with oneself, doesn't it?

Like we went through a weird

political period there for a while where there were a bunch of, there were a lot of op-eds all over the place basically saying, you know, cut your granny off because she's voting Republican or she's small C conservative, you know, she's toxic, get rid of that bitch.

But like, it's not that kind of estrangement that we're talking about, you know, one that's based on an incapacity to allow other people to be who they are.

I think it's, I don't believe in unrequited love.

And I think estranged relationships, relationships that culminate in estrangement are something akin to unrequited love.

You know, they're a person who realises that nothing's coming back.

So the entire basis of the relationship, the status quo can be maintained provided they continue to behave in exactly the way that maximises the comfort level and the needs of the other person.

And like unrequited love is...

And it doesn't have to be romantic.

It can be, you know, between siblings or parents and children or friends, whoever else.

I think it's a yearning for something.

It's a kind of it can be a wish to prove something about yourself to yourself or, you know, the other person.

Or it can also it can be a sort of impulse to rearrange reality so that it fits with the picture in your head of what you wish things were like.

And estrangement sort of happens when

Awareness of those things becomes intolerable.

You just can't carry it.

You know, you can't carry the kind of dissonance of that anymore.

So I think it's unbearably difficult.
