But I um I fell in love with writing here and realized that this is what I wanted to do.

So this is the first book that has come out since that love affair.

And I could not be more happy to be here sharing it with you.

So it's a little dark.

Um, and I'm just gonna read you a little bit from the beginning.

Except for my sister Ruby.

The rest of us bow our heads for blessing on the food, but her head doesn't bow.

I close my eyes as Dad says the prayer.

May this food nourish and strengthen our bodies.

I open my eyes just to peek.

Ruby's eyes are wide open, staring at me.

I quickly shut my eyes and keep them shut tight.

Amen.

Boiled beets, mashed potatoes from a box, ground hamburger mixed with vegetable soup from a can.

Mom puts the mashed potatoes on a plate and the beets on the side.

She calls this vegetable and hamburger mix mashy soup soupy potatoes.

That's what I called it when I was littler.

It's my favorite meal.

Lavender and Lily complain to each other that the beets make their mashed potatoes pink.

They don't want them touching each other.
