But it isn't just Ruby tonight.
Mom's acting weird too.
Usually if Lavender said barf at the dinner table, she would say something to her and tell me to chew with my mouth closed, and tell Ruby to stop to start eating and stop giving everyone the silent treatment.
But Mom isn't eating.
It seems like she can barely hear us because she's listening to someone in her head.
That makes her shake it like she's saying no.
She looks so sad.
I'm almost finished with my first helping when mom says, loud and sharp, the first thing she said all dinner.

You know that you must not ever, ever get into anyone's car.
or go anywhere with anybody, unless it's me or dad, right?
Lavender and Lily and I look at mom.
We three nod our heads.
Only Ruby doesn't look and doesn't nod.
She scarfs down her food like mom isn't saying anything serious at all.
Stranger danger, Lily says like she's McGruff the crime dog, and me and Lavender giggled, but we stop, seeing how Mom's mouth turns down.
Yes, you should be careful around strangers, Mom says.
But also not just strangers.
You shouldn't accept rides or go with anyone who isn't me or dad.
What about Uncle Gerald?
