Ruby sits at the ed uh edge of my bed in the room that I share with her.

I wonder if she's going to stay in tonight or go out the window.

She sneaks out all the time, and some nights before she leaves there's a tapping on the glass.

If I'm asleep, I might dream it's a ghost or a monster wanting to come in, but then I'll wake up and I'll see it's one of her boyfriends.

It's Saturday night, so she usually sneaks out at some point when the house is quiet like this.

But instead, she's just sitting here on my bed in her nightgown.

Acting super nice to me and asking if I want her to brush my hair.

Sure, I say, worried, because when Ruby acts nice, it means she's going to make me do something I don't want to do.

Poor Mom, says Ruby, moving the brush softly through my hair.

She just can't understand how such a beast could even exist, especially here in this fake happy town.

She can't even imagine that this beast is living right under her nose.
