Now that Laura was in bankruptcy court, all of her previous sworn statements came under scrutiny.
There appeared to be some inconsistencies.
After the first meeting of creditors, Laura's bankruptcy case was referred to the United States Department of Justice.
My understanding is that the Department of Justice has a function that I think most people don't realize.
Amongst all the other important things they do in the government, I think they serve as a watchdog function over the bankruptcy process.
So I think someone must have notified them.
Certainly it wasn't my office, but someone notified them that Laura's bankruptcy had some red flags, and then they conducted their own investigation.
I got a copy of Laura's bankruptcy filing.
Her debts tell a story of their own.
Aside from what she owes on her car and to Clayton, she claims to owe nearly $50,000 to over 20 creditors.
That amount includes medical and veterinary debt, credit card accounts, and buy now, pay later accounts.
