So I've recommended Elizabeth Strout's Tell Me Everything.
And it's quite interesting the way it begins.
So she tends to do this thing of bringing characters in fragment by fragment.
So it's as if you're walking along a street and you start following somebody and then you move off and you're following someone else.
And she sort of begins to build this town...
in your mind as she describes things.
And it's partly this thing of
getting to know a character from their own thoughts and then getting to know them through the thoughts of others and the way they react to the character.
And all these little judgments we make about each other and ourselves.
And the idea that she brings in, which is, you know, everything is so ephemeral and what do we really know about each other and ourselves and how we make judgments based on such tiny things sometimes.
But I think what really interested me about this is I would find myself having to stop reading, you know, and pause or put it down for a while because a lot of her thoughts, they're really big thoughts, these tiny thoughts.
And there's a particular thing, what turns out really to be the main character of the story, Bob Burgess, who has appeared in other stories.
It talks about this memory he has of telling his single mother that he, as a child, he doesn't really like Christmas.
And she bursts into tears.
and he's held this guilt for that ever since and he's mystified by it until he's older and he realises this mother was trying to hold the family together and he tells his ex-wife this when they're married and then he tells his current wife this and although they're kind, he says they don't understand in the way that people don't really if they haven't been through what you've been through or haven't had that experience.
There's this really powerful thing that she talks about and Lucy Barton says to Bob Burgess that he is a sin eater.
And I thought that was a really interesting way of describing those people who take on the pain and sorrow of others or the difficulties of their life.
So he takes the shopping in for some woman and listens to her, even though it's very, very boring and very, very tiring.

His brother's anguish because his brother has lied about something so big and you, you know, you can't believe how big this lie is.
