And obviously it goes to shit.

But reading that book was so amazing because they have such... They're so frank and they're so utterly without self-pity and so hilarious.

And that really fed into actually the addictions in Link at Savage Cat, which wasn't at first a big plot point.

But then having read that, it really...

helped me understand something about the character quite unexpectedly because it's a memoir.

Or even people's crazy Berlin apartments that they lived in for 40 years.

It's got Garfield cartoons on the walls and, you know, newspaper for carpets.

I really love the Poetics of Space, the Gaston Bachelard book.

And he talks about how space has a memory.

There's this amazing scene where he talks about sitting in his mother's wardrobe and the psychic weight of that.

And so I think I bring that to spaces for sure that

a space has a memory.

And especially when you're writing about Berlin, you can't escape the memory of space in Berlin.

You live in it.

So I was very interested in that, but also because these are characters who are, they're sort of fragmented psychologically and they're bumped up and they're pretending to be other people, really helps to ground them in a very realized physical space.

If you talk about like what lamp is in someone's room and which cigarettes they're smoking and how many pairs of shoes are in the hall, then it does sort of ground that chaos that's happening up here if you give it some nice hardwood floors.

Often not very nice.

No, lots of very sticky flaws in this book.

Yeah, exactly.

In At Certain Points We Touch, the protagonist there, Bibi, has a good friend called Finlay who's a painter and moves to Berlin and then Finlay becomes very key in this book.
