But I want to resist this.

Like I was reading Despair, Nabokov, and I realized I couldn't read that on the tube because...

Everyone's wittering and whatever going on was distracting me because you can't read a book that good and so rich.

And if you take your eye off the ball with Nabokov, you're kind of lost because he might be describing your own reflection in a jug or something.

But he starts at the end and almost gives it to you like a riddle.

So I think it's really important to be expansive in your language and to be robust and resist this kind of, as you're talking about, this flattening.

Gosh, I read this, I wrote it over two years, so I read tons of stuff.

And you wrote it in Mexico?

I didn't, I wrote At Certain Points We Touch in Mexico.

I wrote this, I think I wrote it all in London.

No, I spent two months in Berlin, actually.

I can't remember anything at the time of reading.

The things that had definitely went back to revisit, like Pale Fire and American Psycho.

Oh, actually, I do remember.

I was reading Rome, A Working Class Family Ages Badly by Juno Roche, which is their memoir of overcoming a heroin addiction.

And it is so real.

and really hilarious.

There are some scenes in there where Juno's writing about trying to kick heroin and having this great idea of going to Egypt to get clean, but taking just enough heroin to last two weeks with them to Egypt, but being so strung out wearing a tub in an airport full of heroin.

And somehow getting to Egypt with a turban full of heroin.
