So I am very much, I'm style first.

And I'm not saying that I'm anti-meaning or that there's no plot in this book.

There is a plot in this book.

But for me, the style is the most important thing.

It is a very ornamental style, I would say.

it's very rich it moves through a lot of what garth greenwell calls registers so there are registers in here which are borrowed from a sort of contemporary art language there are registers from a queer underground there's a a lot of language that's borrowed from old hollywood movies the language that comes with growing up in the northwest

and moving through those in quite a controlled way.

It's like you're writing a choral piece.

There are many tones that you want to hear in it.

I definitely wanted to have an ornamented style because I think it represents a kind of

queerness and definitely a queer femininity as well.

You know, ornamentation is largely seen as a female pursuit and kind of a vain desire as well.

But I think that it's important because... Or a faggy pursuit.

Yeah, both of those things, both feminised and feminine and therefore...

not legitimate, illegitimate.

And I guess coming back to perfection, to that style, in perfection he talks a lot about everywhere in the world you go, you see the same fonts, you have the same matcha lattes and natural wines on the menu, and everyone is talking English, even if they're not a native speaker, or even if they don't have very good English, because it's kind of now a lingua franca.

Also this become language in the age of English.

And not only are we all talking the same language and talking about the same political topics, i.e.

things that happen in North America, but that is kind of creating a monoculture that I am trying to resist because we talk about the same things in the same manner, almost as if everything is now the equivalent of second screen.

You know, you can watch The Godfather and play Animal Crossing and that's fine.
