How do I approach writing about Berlin?

Yes.

Oh, absolutely.

Well, I lived in Berlin for four years.

And for about a decade, I was back and forth in Berlin.

I had friends from school.

I still have friends who live there.

So I went back and forth a lot.

So I know the city quite well.

I also read histories of Berlin, which was very helpful.

I read lots of histories of Bowie's time in Berlin.

I went back through Facebook.

You can skip around and see what people were wearing, what they wrapped in, where they're hanging out, Facebook.

Also estate agents, that's a real great piece of research.

If you think like, oh, so-and-so would live in a house like this.

So yeah, from very concrete bits of material evidence building outwards, Muriel Spark used to say that in her wacky little books,

If she were to say it was raining on July the 22nd, she would make sure it was raining on July the 22nd and then she could get away with anything.

And so likewise, there's a lot of really, really specific research going into where was that restaurant?

Did they really have Lins and Zupa on the menu?

And then from there you get a bit of poetic license.
