the truth and then kind of being rather dramatic with the red herrings, I think.

It was technically very, very difficult to do that because I wanted to write a story, a novel that does have two stories.

They contrast with each other.

They can't both be true, but they have to both be watertight.

So when you read through, they can, whichever version you choose to believe has to be solid.

And so that was quite tricky.

And at times I thought I'd been maybe too subtle about it.

But when doing the audio book, I realized I think I got the balance right, actually.

I did go back to other novels after I'd finished the first draft, which are about doubles.

Pale Fire, Turn of the Screw and American Psycho.

I went back to see like how did Henry James do it?

I've read Turn of the Screw like five times now and I still don't know.

Is she seeing ghosts?

Is she hallucinating?

Do the kids see the ghosts?
