So some participants get the experimental drug and others are given the placebo.

So it's something like a sugar pill and it's got no active drug inside.

But this isn't

always appropriate.

So there's a different kind of trial.

It's called open label.

And both participants and the researchers, they know that the treatment's being given.

But this is the kind of trials that are being used if double blinding is not possible or it's not ethical.

So these are used in new cancer research to test new therapies.

And in these sorts of examples, you can't ethically give them a sugar pill or a treatment that would give them nothing.

You are better off giving the entire cohort something.

No, that's right.

And again, it kind of depends on the design of the project and what's being tested.

But I'll give you a real life example.

So I spoke to a man called Tom who's taken part in three clinical trials, all to do with an eye disease called glaucoma.

And the first one that he took part in was looking for early markers or early signs of the disease in the hope that maybe we could diagnose glaucoma a bit sooner.

And really the only people that could take part in that specific trial were people with early stage glaucoma.

Right.

But other ones are looking for healthy people or people of a certain age or gender to test how the drug or the device works in that population.

Right.
