And then, you know, the relative payment they'll be getting back from the insurance company.
Perhaps that's the other issue that's going on here is that, yes, the White House put forward this aid package and it's unclear to a lot of farmers.
But from what many of them think is that they're not going to be able to get this aid payout if they don't actually plant.
That's one issue.
Another issue is a lot of the farmers have already put some money into planting.
They've used fertilizer, perhaps some of them.
you know, have done other things to the ground that have taken time.
And so they're already sort of financially invested in harvesting this crop.
The other issue is that this payout that they get for not planting their crop is a good bit less than they would get for putting it in the ground and harvesting anything at all.
So it's not an easy calculation for them to make.
Yes, that's right.
It's this very bizarre situation.
I don't know how many farmers you know, but they're pretty friendly people, you know, and most of them are invested in growing season doing well.
The issue is the fewer that decide to plant, though, obviously, the more scarce the commodity becomes and the higher the price goes.
And so you could have the situation where, you know, someone else decides to plant.
And if they do sort of an aggregate decide to plant, then the corn crop price is going to be cheaper, vice versa.
And so as a farmer, you can probably make a very good assessment about what kind of crop you're going to get from your own land.
But what you're being forced to do is trying to make some sort of guess about what, you know, your neighbor down the street and also three states away might be doing with their crop this year.
That's what's pretty remarkable in this situation is that you've seen CEOs of companies start to talk about whether or not farmers are going to plant.
And where you're looking at this very small window of roughly three weeks where farmers are going to be making that ultimate decision for a company like Cortiva that sells seeds and fertilizer to these farmers, it's a pretty big deal.
