She took the 12 weeks of leave, part of it in the spring when her son's school first went remote, and then in late summer when his school reopened, but only for remote school. matched

Well, she had a gap of a few weeks before his school opened for in-person learning. matched

She had used up her leave by that time. matched

She asked her employer, can I just bring my son to work? matched

He can stay in the play area at her workplace. matched

She worked at a fast food restaurant. matched

Her supervisor seemed to think that was okay, but when they tried to clear it with managers higher up the chain, they said, no, the workplace is not a daycare. matched

So she was really in a bind. matched

Fortunately, she was able to find a friend who agreed to watch her son along with her own kids so that he could have some place to be with an adult overseeing him until his school opened. matched

It's very hard to get a read on how many workers have taken advantage of that program. matched

For one thing, it's only available to workers whose companies have 500 or fewer employees. matched

So only about half of the private sector workforce in the U.S. matched

is even eligible for that. matched

One other issue that I ran into in the reporting is that no one is tracking how many people are using these programs. matched

The Labor Department couldn't give me any numbers on how many people have used the programs. matched

I was surprised by that because this is a program that Congress authorized. matched

Employers are actually getting tax credits for the payments they're making to employees who use these leaves. matched
