This is the first time it's ever been measured.

So no one has actually taken the time to independently measure the contribution of a self-employed economy.

Absolutely.

So this work was done between Henry and Simplicity and their economic research hub.

Effectively, it's combining Henry's longitudinal information around self-employed incomes with grounded in official business metrics.

And so we provided some of the real-time insights.

Simplicity provided a whole bunch of the know-how and used the business data to create this really accurate GDP measure.

I think we can see this as being a ratification of something that has been suspected for a very long time.

We've always known that there's a large proportion of the workforce that were sole traders, but no one's actually taken the time to put a measure behind it that we can then, on an ongoing basis, actually look at how it impacts and changes over time.

That's right.

We've seen a big shift in the way people earn their income over the last 10 to 15 years, where people are more turning towards independent earning as opposed to potentially being tied to a single employer just to de-risk the way that they earn.

So this is something we're seeing worldwide, that actually the independent earning economy is growing.

And so what we're seeing here is actually just that being reflected in New Zealand's economic numbers.

Yes, all people working in agribusiness.

You might be in logging.

You might be a relief milker.

There's a large range of different roles that people play in that industry.

So that probably includes the white-collar contracting industry, so people working as business analysts, project managers, sort of across a wide range of industries, including the public sector.

I think proportionally compared to other countries, we're about on par with other OECD nations in terms of the proportion of our GDP that comes from self-employment, which is very, very positive.

But I think that the main thing here is this really sheds a light on it in a way that hasn't been done in the past.
