And as a gay man, he had never been in an acting class and done a same sex scene with a gay man.
And he was also noticing that his straight actors were booking the gay parts and that there was something going on where his gay actors weren't.
And he saw that there was some kind of block.
And what he came to understand for his gay actors, for a lot of the gay actors and then later his trans actors, is that when a lot of the gay men, when they were children and they would reach for pink or they would reach for a doll, their hand would be slapped away.
And they learned early on that to be flamboyant or feminine or effeminate in some way, there would be discipline around that.
And so that's something they learned to suppress and to push down.
And that would keep them, because a lot of the gay parts would be stereotypical.
Maybe you don't want to play those parts, but as a young actor, you just want a book.
And so he was like, there's something going on around women
the natural instincts that we had as children that were sort of beaten out of us, that were shamed out of us, we have to reclaim those as artists so that we can be free.
So that if there is whatever the character is called for, if I have to be flamboyant, if I have to be this, that I don't have some emotional block because of a trauma.
Actors, we have to be...
ready to play, ready to like delve and just do ridiculous things.
I mean, that is the job.
And we can't, there can't be anything like,
a block or a hesitation.
There has to be an immediate, like as acting is reacting, we have to immediately respond.
And so a lot of the class was about reclaiming that kid who liked, who swished, who danced to Beyoncé or for me, you know, wanted to be Lydia Grant or Darcelle Wynn, the sleek solid gold dancer, for those of you who know solid gold.
Like reclaiming that, that sense of play that was beaten out of us or shamed out of us.
So it is a reclamation.
