I was thinking I should bring, I should start on the book to bringing out a fan as a reclamation of that little kid.
So we had gone to Six Flags on a church trip and I had a little spending money and in the gift shop at Six Flags, I bought a handheld fan.
And so there were women, black women in my church who would fan themselves, you know, during church.

It felt like Gone with the Wind was always on TV in Alabama.
Go figure.

And, you know, obviously there's, you know, black characters in Gone with the Wind, but I didn't identify with Mammy or Butterfly McQueen.
I identified, I want to be Scarlett O'Hara.
I mean, Rhett Butler, Ashley.
I mean, these people, you know, these men want her and she's so resilient and amazing.
And so I was in class one day in third grade fanning myself, like imagining I was Scarlett O'Hara.
And that was something I did to kind of disassociate, to take myself out of Alabama, out of the situation I was in.

you know, in my imagination, and, like, Rhett Butler wanted me, and Ashley and I were fighting again, and, you know, we weren't in the space yet when we had to, like, make clothes out of drapery.
And life was good, you know?
And Miss Ridgway, like, literally says, you, come here and bring that thing with you, and she marches me down the hallway to the fourth-grade teacher, tells me, show her what you were doing with that thing, and I, like, you know, I...
