I really like certainty.
I like having opinions.
I like to feel that I know where I stand.
It helps me feel tethered in, you know, what is understandably a very volatile and uncertain world.
Psychologically, that makes lots of sense, doesn't it?
Because our brains are constantly trying to reduce uncertainty and
by making shortcuts and decisions for us so that we don't have to think through every little thing they like patterns you know we like explanations and we like feeling that we've worked something out
The difficulty comes, though, when we let that certainty take over.
If that certainty is closing the door on our curiosity, we stop asking questions.
Now, this is the point at which research, for me, has become so valuable.
So one of the misconceptions about research is that we're trying to find the answer.
But it isn't.
It's never about the answer.
Good research is much more interested in complexity.
And I like questions such as, what conditions does this happen?
Who does this work for?
Who doesn't it work for?
What else might explain what's happening here?
And that's a very different mindset from trying to prove yourself or someone else's theory right.
One thing that I notice a lot of in online thought leadership is the pressure to sound certain or to be outrageous.
