You know, bold statements are, yes, very compelling.
And I know that algorithms reward confidence.
But life isn't as straightforward as, I suppose, an Instagram or LinkedIn carousel or post.
So when I first started reading research...
I know that I found that this one phrase, the evidence is mixed, really frustrating because I wanted the answer.
But it's now one of my favourite phrases because it reminds me that we don't come in neat categories.
Humans are not people who you can place into this kind of box or that kind of box.
So when I talk about evidence, I very rarely mean just academic journals.
Obviously, I read a lot of psychology papers, but evidence comes from many places and it comes from conversations and biographies and history and sociology and anthropology and museums and novels and art.
For me, it's about those patterns and different disciplines and asking, how are these pointing towards or away from a central idea?
And that's the bit of research I really genuinely love.
It's not collecting answers, but collecting perspectives.
That's what I do with clients.
People often think that they're hiring me to find answers, but they're actually hiring me to look at a problem differently.
I spend time reading the papers that they haven't got time to read and also connecting ideas across different fields and translating those into something practical.
Sometimes the most useful insight comes from a psychology paper, but it can also come from somewhere completely unexpected.
My job as a freelancer is simply to connect and join those dots.
Research will never replace intuition or experience, and both are incredibly valuable.
But what research does do is it widens the lens.
It gives another perspective, another piece of evidence, and another question to consider before we make that all-important decision.
