It's not the first time we've come across a case this summer involving a fugitive fleeing the country to escape justice.
A few months ago, we told you about Lee Gilli, a Texas man charged with his wife's murder, who caught off his ankle monitor on the eve of his trial and fled to Italy.

Who maintains his innocence has been fighting his extradition back to the U.S.
from behind bars in an Italian jail.
It got us wondering what is extradition exactly and how does it work?
Well today we're joined by Jock Semmelman, a partner with the law firm of Caton Moushin Rosenman and former assistant U.S.
Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

Yeah, you have worked on major extradition cases in the US and abroad, and you've even served as an expert witness on the subject.
How did you end up focusing on this particular area of the law?
Yeah, um let's start with a basic question if we can break down exactly what extradition means.
And what kind of process exists for the US to request the surrender of a defendant who is in another country?
As part of the extradition process, um, I know there are hearings where the defendants have a chance to fight their extradition, but to be clear, those hearings are not about determining guilt or innocence.
We're not even close to that stage of this at that point.
If we can't I want to talk about the Lee Gilly case.
He's accused of strangling his pregnant wife, Krista, back in twenty twenty four.
